Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) macromolecular assemblies as biocompatible nanocarrier for the antimicrobial lysozyme

The antimicrobial lysozyme (Lys) was electrostatically incorporated to negatively charged crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (c-PGMA) macromolecular assemblies. resulting material characterized by AFM, infrared spectra, water contact angle measurements and the staining with primary amino specific dye fluorescamine. c-PGMA nanoparticles were successfully loaded Lys reaching ratios of 27.3 ± 4.0 22.5 1.7 mg Lys/g polymer for suspensions functionalized glass substrates, respectively. Lys-loaded caused clear inhibition zones on S. aureus E. coli in comparison neat c-PGMA. surfaces intrinsically resistant colonization, but incorporation added resistance bacterial attachment allowed keeping clean cells both strains. A relatively rapid release (24 h) observed at physiological pH (7.4). In addition, substrates could be reloaded several times without losing capacity. assemblies did not display cytotoxicity human dermal fibroblasts as shown 24 h MTT assays. This work demonstrated that durable antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, full reloading capacity peptides. materials have potential application nanocarriers anti-infective uses.
